PROJ 3: Visotor's Interpretive Centre
For the final project of this subject, we are ask to strengthen the concept produced from the previous project. Furthermore, the interpretive centre shall serve 2 main purposes which are, to provide a physical point of reference with visual signifance that keeps alive the culture/history/memory/essence/ of the site, and to provide accomodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.
The VIC must have a total floor area which does not exceed 450 sqm and must be at least 2 storey high. The spaces below must also be included in the design:
Reception
Foyer / Public gathering space
Display / Exhibition / Gallery space
Book / Souvenir shop
M&E / Utilities space(s)
Office
Toilets
Pantry / cafeteria
Storage
1 MISC Space to be defined by design
The VIC that I have designed focuses on evokeing the forgotten memories where many youngster now have forgotten. At the same time, it shows the importance of the memories such as the history which have formed and shaped the society now. The light and shadow from the threads of the roof garden represents the spirits of the past such that one feels the presence of their loved one that have passed away. Whereas the different texture, ceiling heights, light and dim spaces, and foldings in the gallery shows the timeline of the history, feeling of the time and also the way history moulds and space (representing society) respectively. The circulation which evolves around a core where the offices and retail spaces are placed indirectly represent bukit cina as the core of the communities and the spaces and development that evolves around it.
REFLECTION
From this project, I have learned how to generate a design based on the unique character and conditions of the site context. Also, I am able to generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with cosideration of human scale, natural light, and materials/texture,
